Our ambition with this
one-day trip to The Seven Sisters Country Park was to extend our
knowledge of Great Britain’s most extraordinary nature and
environment – something that, due to inconveniences dealing with
our bus reservation, did not quite go as we had planned... We were
forced to reorganize our expedition by rescheduling it from Wednesday
to Monday, which made the day quite more spontaneous than what was
intended.
While traveling to the
Country Park, our bus unfortunately broke down, forcing us to wait
(FOR HOURS AND HOURS AND WEEKS AND MONTHS!) until another vehicle
came to our rescue. Some of us cried, some of us died. Yet finally,
we reached our destination.
The Seven Sisters Country
Park is located in the east of Sussex, more exactly in Eastbourne,
where beautiful surroundings dominate the exterior of the place.
Moreover, being the recording sight of many famous movies has made
the area well known amongst people of all nationalities. You might
have seen, or heard about, the movie Atonement, of which the last
scenes took place here. Actually, during our visit, some of us defied
the gale-force winds and managed to catch a glimpse of the
protagonist’s house, while the rest of us took shelter in a local
tearoom.
Even though the heavy
downpour prevented us from enjoying the full extent of the park, we
could still imagine the beauty of the place on a sunny, summer day
and we understand why The Seven Sisters is so popular amongst
tourists. Most people travel here to explore the beautiful cliffs
located here and the country park itself actually contains 280
hectares of chalk cliffs. The cliffs are in fact what have given this
place its name!
At our stay, we learned
that there are two types of maritime cliffs in East Sussex - the
chalk cliffs of which the ones in Eastbourne are an example, and the
softer sandstone cliffs that can be found eastwards. Altogether,
there are approximately 45km of cliffs in East Sussex and the cliffs
are actually receding at about 35cm each year due to heavy rain or
rough storms.
Even though the journey
to The Seven Sisters Country Park did not in any way go as planned,
we still had a pleasant time - and we will certainly never forget the
feeling of soaking wet clothes and shoes!
